Consolidated Construction Achieves World-Class Safety Standards Through Platinum-level ABC STEP Program

Consolidated Construction Co., Inc. announced it has achieved Platinum Level in Associated Builders and Contractor’s STEP Safety Management System, meaning the company is 242% safer than the industry average. Founded more than three decades ago, STEP has evolved into a world-class safety program that dramatically improves safety performance among construction industry participants.

“We are totally committed to nurturing a stronger and better safety culture at Consolidated Construction,” said company president John Schneider. “We’ve made great strides over the last few years, and this is another important milestone in our progress toward making safety a natural part of our actions every day, without giving it a second thought. It’s just who we are.”

Consolidated Construction has dedicated Safety Managers as well as a corporate Safety Committee that draws its members from across all facets of the company’s operations. Our Think-Teach-Talk safety initiative urges employees to get involved in safety efforts on jobsites, in the office and at home, which was particularly impactful while many people were working remotely during the COVID-19 event. On jobsites, our foremen and superintendents “begin with the end in mind” by starting each day with a discussion of safety risks and how to prevent them while achieving quality and production goals.

STEP participants measure their safety processes and policies on key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidents. Consolidated Construction was lauded for their commitment to overall safety awareness and their diligent safety communications efforts.

“Safety is a journey that is made possible because of systems like STEP, which enables ABC member contractors like Consolidated Construction to have a safer and more productive jobsite,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development. “Committing to total human health is essential to ensure both the physical and mental health and safety of our workforce, and I commend Consolidated for consistently fulfilling those commitments to raising the bar of safety performance.”

According to ABC’s annual Safety Performance Report, STEP participants, regardless of company size or type of work, and can reduce recordable incidents up to 85%, making the best performing companies more than eight times safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average.
